Tomorrow evening in Germany, 32-year-old Ronald Hearns will get the opportunity to at least partially emulate his boxing legend and all-time great of a father, Thomas Hearns. Going in to challenge the talented Felix Sturm for the German’s WBA middleweight title, the once-beaten Hearns is a considerable underdog.
Not often in his own incredible career was “The Hitman” ever an underdog, yet he must leave the fighting to his son this time. Hearns Senior, now aged 52 yet occasionally revealing how he still harbours the desire to fight again himself, will be as close to Ronald’s corner as possible on Saturday night (even though he won’t actually be working his son’s corner), rooting for his offspring for all he’s worth. But can Hearns, 26-1(20) get himself a win?
Sturm appears to hold almost all the advantages in this one. Way more experienced, at amateur and pro level, possessing a better chin and having home-town advantage also, Sturm is even the younger man at age 32. From a physical, wear-and-tear standpoint, Hearns is the younger fighter; having had nowhere near the long and hard career Felix has. This, along with possibly an edge in firepower, might, just might, give Hearns a chance.
No banger at 34-2-1(14), Sturm, if he does stop Hearns, will likely do it late on, after having worn his challenger down. But with 20 KO’s to his name (albeit nearly all of them against guys nowhere near the world rankings), Hearns could stun Sturm if he catches him with a quickly delivered, sharp blow. Hearns has bitten at the negative comments some people have had over his big shot. Choosing not to allow those who say he has got the title shot merely because of his surname to bother him, Hearns has promised he will give his all tomorrow and that “the cards will fall where they may.”
Having smiled pretty much throughout the recent, final press conference for the fight, Hearns appears as relaxed and as confident as possible. But is the man who, in his biggest test to date was stopped (in an exciting fight that saw both men go down) by Harry Joe Yorgey, out of his depth?
Hearns, I believe, will not freeze when the bell rings; instead coming out looking to box smoothly and throw a lot of leather. Sturm will likely have a good look at Hearns, sizing up whether or not his challenger poses him with any threat. A naturally gifted boxer, Sturm (who, we must remember has boxed just once since September of 2009, and may be a little rusty as a result) will pick his spots and look to dictate the pace. Unless Hearns can ruffle the WBA champ with something quite early, I think we may see Sturm box a dominant fight.
Hearns may go the distance but, as much as his fans would love to see him bring a major belt back to the Hearns name, he will not win. Not unless we see a pretty big upset this weekend. There is a slight chance Sturm will begin to feel the rigours of a ten-year pro career in this fight (and again, Hearns really is so much more the fresher man), but if this doesn’t happen Hearns will likely be a step behind for most of the rounds.
I go for the WBA champ to retain via a fairly wide UD.
